Birth Certidão: How to Request and Check It
This is the document requested for getting married, applying for a first passport, enrolling a child in school, or nationality processes. Anyone can request another person's birth certidão (not just their own) through the same service.
How to Request or Check It
Online — Civil Online
- Go to civilonline.mj.pt
- Choose "Certidão Request" → Birth
- Fill in the certidão holder's details
- Pay by Multibanco or credit card, within 48 hours
- Receive the access code by email and SMS once the certidão is ready
- Use the code to check/share it — checking is always free
In Person
- Go to a Conservatória do Registo Civil (Civil Registry Office) or Loja de Cidadão
- Bring your Cartão de Cidadão
- Ask for the "certidão de nascimento" at the counter
- Pay on-site
The Access Code and the "Duplicate"
There's no separate "duplicate" process: the access code replaces that need. As long as it's within the validity period (6 months), anyone with the code can check the certidão online. If the period expires, or you need to share it with a new organization, just submit a new request — there's no extra paperwork.
