Death Certidão: How to Request and Check It
The death certidão is requested online through Civil Online (civilonline.mj.pt). It costs €10 and, unlike other civil registry certidões, the access code has no expiry date.
This is the document requested in inheritance processes, closing bank accounts, cancelling subscriptions and contracts, or survivor's pension applications. It's commonly requested by funeral homes or lawyers on behalf of the family.
How to Request or Check It
Online — Civil Online
- Go to civilonline.mj.pt
- Choose "Certidão Request" → Death
- Fill in the deceased person's details
- Pay by Multibanco or credit card, within 48 hours
- Receive the access code by email and SMS once the certidão is ready
In Person
- Go to a Conservatória do Registo Civil (Civil Registry Office) or Loja de Cidadão
- Bring your Cartão de Cidadão
- Ask for the "certidão de óbito" at the counter
- Pay on-site
You don't need to be a direct family member to request this certidão — anyone can do it through the same service.
